The Watergate has an indelible place in US history. A mere mention of the building sparks memories of scandal, espionage, and intrigue. A little-known fact is there is another Watergate complex in the Washington, DC area, and no, it’s not an in a clandestine location. The Watergate at Landmark is located in Alexandria, Virginia, a short distance from the nation’s capital. The building complex is composed of high-rise towers and recreational facilities within a gated compound.
The location was selected for the setting, the panoramic views and the conveniences of condominium living. The ideal situation for a couple seeking to downsize presented the opportunity to completely renovate the circa 1975 interior. A maze of dark and cramped interior spaces was optimized and reimagined for 21st-century living.
The kitchen and living spaces were combined into a large area with access to light and the surrounding views. Efficient space planning created two significantly larger bathrooms in the master bedroom suite. A second bedroom became an office space and occasional guest bedroom.
Simple and maintenance friendly materials are used throughout. In entry and living space, subtle ceiling drops serve to define areas and are also used to conceal electrical wiring. Out of sight and out of mind is a large utility room and laundry room, a rare feature in apartments this size. Walnut was selected as the primary wood used throughout. In the kitchen, the cabinetry carefully integrates the appliances with wood panels. When not in use, it is a backdrop to the living space.
At this Watergate, it’s all about comfortable living.
