“Weekend getaway” typically conjures images of beaches and mountains, but for this couple, an apartment in the city is the place to go to get away.
A one bedroom apartment in downtown Washington, DC, became the perfect location close to restaurants, museums, theater and shopping. Being in a vibrant urban environment in a building with lots of glass walls also presents its’ challenges, like making the bedroom dark and quiet at night. The solution became to install a removeable wall with sound deadening material between the bedroom and the building façade, which not only solved the issue of getting a good night’s sleep, but also created an intimate space to enjoy the view of the street, listen to music, or read the newspaper.
The main space of the apartment is equally casual and elegant. The design was driven by comfort. Oversized seating perfect for lounging is paired with tailored lounge chairs, perfect for settling into with a great book. With great lighting, of course.
What started as a weekend retreat may very well become a permanent migration from the suburbs to the city.
